2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election

RECALL:  JUST  SAY  NO!

The 2021 California gubernatorial recall election is a special election to decide whether to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. The election is scheduled for September 14, 2021. Every voter will be issued a mail-in ballot starting August 14, 2021.

RECALL  PRETZEL  LOGIC

  • Any adult US Citizen California resident can pay $4,200, release 5 years of tax returns and get on the ballot

  • Two part ballot:
Q1: Recall Newsom from the Office of the Governor
                [Requires majority vote]
Q2: If recalled, who should replace?
[Requires only plurality of the vote!!]

  • Thus, suppose:

    • 50.1% of votes are cast to recall Newsom – Newsom is recalled!

    • Highest polling candidate, say Caitlyn Jenner, gets just 10% of the votes

  • Then Newsom (supported by 49.9%) is replaced by Caitlyn Jenner with just 10% of the vote!!!

BACKGROUND

California is a strongly BLUE state and every statewide office is currently held by a Democrat. Republicans have made a total of seven attempts to hold a special election to recall Gov. Newsom because that is the only way they can hope to elect a Republican governor. Six of those attempts failed to gather enough signatures. The seventh attempt was granted a four month time extension due to the pandemic, and managed to get enough signatures to trigger a recall election.

The ballot has two questions:

  1. Should Gavin Newsom be recalled (removed) from office?  YES / NO

  2. Who should replace him?
[There are 46 names on the list. By law, Newsom cannot be one of them.]

If more than half the voters say “No” to the first question, Newsom will remain Governor and responses to the second question are irrelevant. Voting NO on the first question does not prevent voters from choosing a name under the second question.

No major Democrat is on the list of 46 names. Several Republicans are listed. However, the state Republican party has declined  to endorse a candidate.

They See Blue strongly opposes recalling Governor Newsom. We see this as a cynical Republican ploy to engineer a coup, in the hope that Democratic turnout is weak and Republican turnout is strong. Most of the candidates on the ballot have little to no political experience. In contrast, during these very challenging times, Governor Newsom has done an outstanding job.

Specifically:

  • Despite very dense population areas, California' death rate due to COVID-19 is surprisingly low, at 32nd highest (New Jersey and New York top the list). Gov. Newsom has shown leadership in addressing viral infections. He listened to the experts and stayed focused on keeping California safe. In March, 2020, Newsom issued the  first statewide shelter-in-place order in the nation, and worked aggressively to obtain ventilators and vaccines. Despite its large population and area, California is ahead of the US average in percentage of people vaccinated.

  • California's economy continues to lead the nation and is one of the strongest in the world. According to Bloomberg, "... the Golden State has no peers among developed economies for expanding GDP, creating jobs, raising household income, manufacturing growth, investment in innovation, producing clean energy and unprecedented wealth through its stocks and bonds. All of which underlines Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement last month of the biggest state tax rebate in American history. "

  • California leads the nation in job creation .

  • California has always led the nation in addressing environment, climate change, clean air regulations, women's rights, disability rights, and gun control. Having a Republican take-over of our government puts our progressive policies at risk.

If Senator Dianne Feinstein retires or is unable to continue, a Republican governor would replace her with a Republican and the delicate 50-50 balance in the US Senate would turn into a Republican majority. This would blockade the Biden agenda and result in gridlock.

Republicans are in denial about science. Republican-governed states are in turmoil because of low vaccination rates and safety measures to address COVID-19. A Republican governor would halt all our progress on addressing climate change.

Don't let the Republicans steal the Governor's mansion
