Dow tumbles nearly 900 points after Trump reignites trade war between the world’s two largest economies: US stocks closed sharply lower Friday after President Donald Trump threatened to hike tariffs on imports from China, reigniting fears of a trade war that rocked global markets earlier this year. On Truth Social, President Trump threatened a 100% tariff on goods from China because they are imposing export controls on rare-earth minerals needed by the American electronics industry. CNN

Are we in a recession? Yes — if you live in one of these 22 states: The U.S. economy is very close to falling into a damaging contraction, and many states are already experiencing a recession, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. Zandi estimates that 22 states plus the District of Columbia are now experiencing persistent economic weakness and job losses that are likely to continue. Government shutdown continues as Trump directs Pentagon to use "all available funds" to pay troops: There has been little movement in Congress toward ending the government shutdown in recent days. The Senate rejected motions to advance Democratic and Republican-backed spending bills for a seventh time Thursday and left town until Tuesday afternoon, meaning the deadlock will not be resolved until at least next week. Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Trump Ally: Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado rang in her Nobel Peace Prize victory Friday by dedicating the award to the people of Venezuela fighting for freedom — and President Donald Trump, who has publicly lobbied for the prize for himself. POLITICO

Gazans stream back home as Israel-Hamas ceasefire holds: Thousands of Palestinians streamed north along the coast of Gaza on Saturday, trekking by foot, car, and cart back to their abandoned homes as a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas appeared to be holding. REUTERS

Dominion, the voting tech company at the center of false 2020 claims, is sold: The buyer, Liberty Vote, is founded by Scott Leiendecker, a former St. Louis Republican election director who founded an election technology company widely used by election officials. NPR

California becomes 3rd US state to recognize Diwali as a holiday: California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law on Oct. 6, effective Jan. 1, that would authorize public schools and community colleges to close on Diwali. Employees and students will also be allowed to take excused time off to celebrate the popular holiday. AMERICAN BAZAAR

Walmart attempted kidnapping case: Mahendra Patel seeks $25M settlement after charges dropped: Patel, whose attempted kidnapping charges were dropped, plans to sue the city and police department that arrested him if they can’t settle. He spent 45 days in jail after a mother accused him of trying to kidnap her son at the Walmart on Cobb Parkway in Acworth. A judge dropped the charges in August. WSBTV

Barron Trump tipped for top TikTok job: Barron Trump, 19, is reportedly being considered for a leading role at TikTok as the platform transitions to U.S. ownership. This claim comes after his father, President Trump, issued an executive order handing control to American investors led by Oracle's Larry Ellison. YAHOO

The Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Has Been Canceled: The Trump administration has killed a huge proposed solar power project in Nevada that would have been one of the largest in the world. The super project in southern Nevada was set to cover 185 sq miles – a footprint close to the size of Las Vegas – and include seven solar projects proposed by different companies, including NextEra Energy Resources, Leeward Renewable Energy, Arevia Power and Invenergy. Together, the network of solar panels and batteries was set to produce 6.2 gigawatts of energy, enough to power nearly 2 million homes. GUARDIAN
