There’s a crucial election coming up in California on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. It’s not a presidential race, but it might be one of the most important votes we cast to protect our democracy.
This special election includes just one item on the ballot — Proposition 50 (The Election Rigging Response Act) — but it carries enormous weight. If you care about California having a voice in national policy, you need to vote YES.
What’s Going On?
Donald Trump and Republican politicians in Texas have already started rigging the 2026 election — redrawing their districts mid-decade to create five extra Republican seats in Congress. They’re not doing this based on new census data. They’re doing it to cheat. And other GOP-led states may follow suit.
If they succeed, Republicans could retake control of Congress — no matter how the majority of Americans vote.
To protect Californians from losing our fair share of representation, Governor Newsom and the State Legislature put Prop 50 on the ballot. It’s our response to this attack on democracy.
Why It’s Especially Urgent for South Asian Communities
Many of our families came to the U.S. believing in fairness, opportunity, and freedom, but in recent years, we’ve seen dangerous rhetoric turn into perilous policy. ICE raids, illegal tariffs that raise food prices, and help denied after natural disasters — Trump has already shown what unchecked power looks like.
Prop 50 is about making sure we don’t let him seize even more.
What Prop 50 Actually Does
Texas has redrawn its maps to favor Republicans. Some other states, such as Missouri and Ohio, are planning to do the same. In response, California will temporarily adjust our congressional maps to balance that impact fairly. After the 2030 census, California goes back to its current fair, nonpartisan redistricting system.
Prop 50 isn’t about cheating back. It’s about leveling the playing field.
Prop 50 protects our values while pushing for national redistricting reform.
This is a measured, temporary, and proportional way to prevent the theft of power.
Who Supports Prop 50?
Prop 50 is backed by leaders and organizations we trust:
President Barack Obama
Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff
California Democratic Congressional Delegation
Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California
California Teachers Association, SEIU, and Labor Unions
Governor Gavin Newsom
These are the people and groups who’ve stood up for our healthcare, reproductive rights, immigrant protections, and workers’ rights.
Who’s Opposing It?
Charles Munger, rightwing billionaire
Carl DeMaio, a Trump loyalist pushing mass deportations and anti-worker policies
Thomas Hiltachk, the lawyer defending Trump’s anti-democratic lawsuits in California
But I Don’t Like the Map Changes…
This is not ideal, but this isn’t politics as usual - we are in a moment of crisis.
If we vote NO, we give Trump the chance to seize unchecked power. We can’t afford that. Voting YES on Prop 50 is about standing together for the bigger picture: our democracy, our voice, and our future.
