  • They See Blue® congratulates Nusrat Choudhury as first Muslim woman to be confirmed as federal judge

PRESS RELEASE Return to Press Release Page They See Blue® congratulates Nusrat Choudhury as first Muslim woman to be confirmed as federal judge JUNE 18, 2023 — They See Blue®, an organization focused on mobilizing South Asian voters to elect Democrats, congratulates civil rights lawyer Nusrat Choudhury who was confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She is the first Bangladeshi-American and female Muslim federal judge to achieve that honor in the nation. “We are very pleased by Judge Choudhury’s confirmation,” said They See Blue® co-founder Rajiv Bhateja. “The Biden administration is to be complimented for its openness to diversity in judicial appointments. This would not have been possible but for the narrow Senate majority, which underscores the importance of voting in every election.” The Senate June 15 confirmed Judge Choudhury by a 50-49 vote, with every Democrat except one supporting her. She has been a dedicated civil rights and civil liberties attorney, advocating for equal justice under the law. Chicago-born and bred, Judge Choudhury, who has degrees from Columbia and Princeton Universities and Yale Law School, was most recently the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union. She also previously worked as a development associate for Women’s Prison Association & Home, Inc. and for Spence-Chapin Services to Families & Children, both based in New York City. Judge Choudhury joined the ACLU in 2008 as a Marvin M. Karpatkin Fellow, supporting its Racial Justice Program in a variety of federal constitutional and statutory matters at the trial level, including conducting legal research, preparing and taking depositions, and factual investigations. The following year she joined the ACLU’s National Security Project as a staff attorney. Her cases involved constitutional rights matters, including due process, equal protection, freedom of religion and protection against unreasonable search and seizure. About They See Blue: Founded in 2018 by four South Asian Americans, They See Blue® has grown to more than 6,000 members with 22 grassroots chapters nationwide. • They See Blue® Applauds Biden Signing Inflation Reduction Act into Law, But It’s Just a First Step

PRESS RELEASE Return to Press Release Page They See Blue® Applauds Biden Signing Inflation Reduction Act into Law, But It’s Just a First Step AUGUST 16, 2022 — The Inflation Reduction Act, which was signed into law today by President Biden, will significantly cut carbon emissions, lower prescription drug prices and reduce our deficit. They See Blue® hails this landmark legislation that will transform American lives and provide the foundation for greater progress in energy, the environment and healthcare. Americans overwhelmingly want our government to take action to address the deleterious effects of climate change and this bill delivers, helping us reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030. “Our communities believe climate change is a top priority and this important legislation shows that Democrats are committed to action in addressing climate change while delivering on people’s energy needs,” said Rajat Srivastava, a co-founder of the They See Blue® organization, which is tasked with mobilizing Americans of South Asian origin to vote for Democrats. “But this is just a good first step as we deal with more frequent and intense wildfires, droughts and storms.” The legislation includes $369 million that will spur consumer investment in more energy-efficient appliances, solar technology and electric vehicles; incentivize manufacturing commitment to create reliable, cleaner energy production; and drive energy investments in disadvantaged and rural communities. But the law will do so much more. It will allow Medicare to directly negotiate drug prices and cap out-of-pocket costs as well as lower Affordable Care Act premiums. While it will cap insulin costs at $35 per month for Medicare patients, Senate Republicans voted it down for private insurance patients. We need to take care of all Americans. To pay for all this, the legislation will raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and corporations for their fair share and bolster IRS tax enforcement. This will help pay down America’s debt that will counter inflation and grow the economy. “We commend the Biden administration and congressional Democrats in delivering benefits to the American people, but we have to do more,” said Srivastava. ###

  • Climate Change | They See Blue

CLIMATE CHANGE Despite the short-term easing of petroleum reserves by the Biden administration to reduce the pressure on gas prices, climate change is an issue where there is a clear difference of opinion, policy proposals and commitment between the Democratic Party and the GOP. We only have to look at the differences between Biden's and former President Trump's track records to see this. Over four years, Trump: Weakened Obama-era limits on planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and from cars and trucks; Removed protections from more than half the nation’s wetlands and withdrew the legal justification for restricting mercury emissions from power plants; Worked to open up more land for oil and gas leasing through the Interior Department by limiting wildlife protections and weakening environmental requirements for projects; Loosened efficiency standards through the Energy Department for a wide range of products; and Withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement on global measures to tackle climate change. All told, nearly 100 environmental rules were officially reversed, revoked or otherwise rolled back under Trump. In an analysis done by the New York Times (subscription required) in association with Harvard and Columbia, they found: … the Trump administration’s deregulatory actions were estimated to significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions over the next decade and lead to thousands of extra deaths from poor air quality each year. In just his first year in office , Biden: Signed an instrument to bring the U.S. back to the Paris Agreement; Pledged to cut U.S. climate pollution by 50-52% by 2030, putting the U.S. in the top tier of global climate ambition; Declared the U.S. will work with China to tackle climate challenges (including methane pollution); Joined more than 100 countries in committing to end deforestation during this decade and backing the LEAF Coalition — a public-private effort to mobilize funding for large-scale forest protection; Created a “climate cabinet” that includes senior officials in key leadership positions throughout the federal government who are making climate action a priority; Established the first-ever White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council to raise awareness of environmental justice issues and provide guidance to government entities on how to address them; Established the Justice40 initiative to commit at least 40% of the overall benefits from federal investments in climate and clean energy to overburdened communities; Announced the largest offshore wind lease in U.S. history; Developed a plan to ensure that 30% of U.S. lands and waters are designated as protected land by 2030; Finalized the strongest-ever pollution standards for cars and passenger trucks; Proposed historic climate and health protections to strengthen and expand limits on methane pollution from the oil and gas industry; Removed rules installed by the Trump administration that censored science and distorted the economic impact of air pollution; and Signed an infrastructure bill with several critically important climate investments, including funding for electric vehicle charging stations, clean electric buses, community resilience against natural disasters, lead pipe replacement and the cleanup of polluting orphan oil and gas wells and providing a $20 billion investment in clean energy research and development. The difference could not be starker. While there is a lot more work to be done on making sure we do not leave an unlivable planet to our children, there is no doubt that only electing more and more progressive Democrats can give us the ability to effect policy change in a country where electoral college distortions give disproportionate power to stakeholders in industries that contribute to and profit from catastrophic climate change. The information above is aimed at helping you better understand about the progress to mitigate climate change. To better understand the issue and how to talk about it, please visit the resources below, which provide pointers on addressing the topic with friends and family. • Josh Harder | They See Blue

< Back to All Candidates Josh Harder Website California House Josh Harder flipped District CA-10 that had been held by the GOP for a long time in 2018. This was the first election TSB was involved in. CA-10 is a very purple district which leans red and is highly vulnerable to falling into Republican hands again . To make sure that this doesn't happen, TSB is joining forces with several local Swing Left chapters to host a fundraiser for Josh. Josh is a young fifth-generation resident of California's Central Valley who won his Congressional seat in CA-10 in both 2018 and 2020. He is a great candidate who understands the needs of his constituents and a solid partner for President Biden to help implement his agenda. CA-10 is a highly competitive district that Joe Biden won by only 1.6 points, and it may become even more competitive with redistricting. CA-10 is primarily comprised of Stanislaus County which voted to recall Governor Newsom . This clearly illustrates the uphill challenge being faced by Josh in the 2022 midterms. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has identified Josh as one of their top targets in the nation. All of this suggests that this will be Josh's most competitive race yet.
